Troy Tang
Woodwind
Flute • Established Artist
Troy Tang studied flute at the University of Auckland with Uwe Grodd and Kathryn Moorhead, before seeking out private lessons with Robert Aitken (University of Toronto, Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg) and Keith Underwood (Mannes School of Music, Aaron Copland School of Music). His basic approach to the instrument is inspired by Aitken and Underwood's unique pedagogies, both renowned for their insight into the physical aspects of flute-playing.
During his time in the Singapore Armed Forces, he performed for two years in a small classical ensemble with Kong Xianlong (Singapore Symphony Orchestra), Mervyn Lee (Young Steinway Artist/harpsichordist), and Gabriel Ng (Bach Prize, 2012 Menuhin Competition). His activities in the Chiron Group have also allowed him to attend/organize masterclasses by Stephen Larsen, James Bush, Jonathan Cohen, Bede Hanley, David Garner, Annelien van Wauwe, Natalia Lomeiko and Yuri Zhislin, furthering his musical development.
He works with students of all levels and abilities, using a personal approach developed through his broad musical experience. His students hold music scholarships in various schools around Auckland and have seen success in overseas competitions, taught in conjunction with the rest of the flute department.
